Frost and the tedious set up.

March 27, 2008 at 4:06 pm (Business story) (, )

Pat asked Frost to help her set up her booth.  Frost was ammeniable to this, as she wanted the chance to learn about Art and Craft Fairs without having to learn on the fly.  So Frost set out to help Pat set up.  First there was the painting– delayed because the Carpenter was late! Then there was the set up– delayed because the van rental was late! The set up was cumbersome and very intricate.  Not to mention very, VERY orange.  Fortnately, nothing went seriously wrong.  The set up Pat planned didn’t quite fit the dimensions of reality, but Pat had with her the very architectuarly practiced J-Fever, so he was able to make the booth work and look better for it.  Frost was handy with the electroncs (once she knew what the hell she shoud do to help)  and got lots of excercise carrying things, which made her happy.   The set up still took some time, and was just plain tedious.   Frost looked at the set up and looked at other set ups, and decided that she was going to be much more interested in a streamlined, simple set up with an emphasis on a interactive setting. She saw one booth setting up with curtains that hooked over the rods rather than threading over them.  This was a very good idea that Frost was definitely going to use.   She also saw some thin metal poles that clamped together to provide support for lighting.  This was exactly the sort of solution that she was looking for!   It also occured to her that since she had jellies to hang, she wasn’t going to have a table space for them.  Maybe she could make a part of her booth a floor sitting area, with pillows.  Then you could sit under her jellies and rest, while looking at her goods, and thinking about how much you want to buy.   Or at least just rest your feet and keep the artist entertained while she sits in her booth all day.  These thoughts made her happy, and kept her going through-out the day.

The Web Page

March 25, 2008 at 2:27 am (Business story) (, , , , , )

Frost sat down at the computer, her thoughts running over a question asked ealier that day– “Do you have a Web Page?”

The answer was easy, of course.  She did have a web-page.  It looked rather primative but it was sufficiant to show off her work in a more professional fasion.  She also had what she called a Sketch book in a Deviant part of the web, and an Etsy Shop.  Add to that the blog she had reciently begun and she had what could be called a web presence.

However,  none of the threads of her web were connected together.  Sure the Sketch book had a link to the Etsy shop, and the etsy shop had a link to her web-page, but frankly it wasn’t holding together very well.  The URL for her webpage was long and unweildy, and sending people to her etsy shop, while very easy, didn’t let them see the more interesting aspects of her work.  Sending the to the sketch book was pretty good for showing what she’d been working on, but not very professional, and it didn’t particularly show the focus of her work as she never ment it to.

All this ment that her sending people online to see her work was a haphazard thing.

Pondering this problem while she threw on the wheel that day, Frost began to realize that maybe her new Studio Blog might offer a solution to the problem.   So she set down to update her web-presence and try to weave the separate threads together.

First she went to her Web Page and updated it.  Then she went to her Studio Blog and added a link to the web-page.  Next she would add a link to her blog in her Scrap-book, and a link to her blog in her Etsy shop.

That way, everyone looking to find out about her art would be directed to a central front page, and could find out more from there.

Once upon a time…

March 24, 2008 at 1:34 pm (Business story) (, )

There was a woman named Frost who loved to make pottery above all else.  Alas, she was one of the many of her day who was afflicted with a curse called ADHD.  She wanted  very desperately to do ceramics as her one and only job, but because of the disorganazation of her mind, she feared that she would not be able to be sucessful at selling her work, or keeping up with all the details of a business.

Even worse was the distinct eversion to numbers and patterns that had formed in her mind over the years, starting with her encounter with Quadre Mathimiaticus– a story in and of itself. Though she tried to work hard, when it came to the business she kept on screwing up and soon dispaired of ever being able to acheive her dream and goal in life. In dispair she would hide her free time in storys and books, and her husband whom she loved very much.

Then one day, her good friend Obvious Man came along and smacked her upside the head.

“You like storys!” He said, “And stories are organized.”

“And what do you mean by that?” Frost asked, while trying to get ready for a long day of work and battle with the evils of business. She had bills to pay and a bank to balance, and that was just the first thing in the morning.

“Perhaps you should try writing your business as a story.” Obvious Man, and the universe sighed with an operatic chorus of “Duh!” as it often did when Obvious Man spoke his magic words.

“Oh.” Frost paused, musing it over as she sipped her morning breakfast of sunlight (vitamine D is very important!) “I suppose it couldn’t hurt to try.”

And so she did try, starting that very day.

To be continued.

Mugs all lined up in a row…

March 20, 2008 at 2:10 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , )

I finished off 10 mugs yesterday, ready for the bisq.  Yeay.  *tired sigh*   And I’ve got 5.5 tripods ready to bisq, or in the bisq.  I need more, and I need to make some vases along the lines of my ananas work.

Ananas

I’m going to be in New Jersey on the Weekend of the 1st of May.  Selling my sculptural work.  Of course, now I need to get my sculptural work in gear so sell.  Unfortunately its spring and I’m feeling the color vibes (GLAZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZE!) When its fall and I’m feeling the seasonal depression, its not as hard to sit down at a sculpture for the hours needed to get the texture I want.  Bah.

Keeping in Shape in the studio

March 17, 2008 at 1:37 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , )

Last Friday I attempted to wedge about 50 lbs of clay with my feet.  Since I have never done this before, it was met with only a little success.  However, it was indeed a full body work out.  Back, stomach legs and arms all got a bit of work.  Not to mention, 50 lbs of clay being wedged is always a good thing. :)
Today I’m planning on poking some holes. :)
I got in touch with my College professor (Gary Baxter) to get a glaze recipie for a very consistant red we used in college.  He sent it to me and now hopefully! we’re going to have a red at my studio. If any of ya’ll out there in Journal land know of a good cone6 red (ha ha) PLEASE let me know!

Hot Mugs!

March 12, 2008 at 11:43 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , )

latte 1 latte 4

Just got my latte mugs out from the kiln.  They turned out very SWEET!  The buyer decided that she wanted three of the tall ones (all that I had.)  So that was pretty awesome too.

I’ve got some more goodies to show later, when I get the pictures up. :) *does the happy kiln dance*

Todays plans

March 10, 2008 at 3:50 pm (Uncategorized)

I’ve got a couple of packages to mail (yeay!) and then I’m going to the studio to work.  I’ve got bowls to alter, and critters to make.  Sponge critters.  Yeay!  I’m trying out a darker clay on them, so we’ll see how this turns out.
I’m really being thrown for a look by the spring ahead thing. I’m not complaining though, more sunlight is always a good thing by me! Yeay!

How does one do a blog about clay?

March 8, 2008 at 4:21 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , )

I’m not certain.  What would you want to hear about?

Yesterday, I spent my time on working on bowls, and some trimming.

This is why I never have much to talk about.  Hours of work can be summed up in a simple sentence.  Bah.

Its a Start.

March 7, 2008 at 5:41 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , )

Hey there world.  My name is Meghan Chalmers-McDonald, but I go by Frost Indri in the Web world.  Consider it a lingering touch of paranoia left from my child hood, a strange sort of nostalgia.  I’m a ceramicist working out of Pawtucket, Rhode Island.  I like to do sculptures that are very intensivly detailed pieces.  I also enjoy playing with glaze, but that doesn’t work to well with my sculptures. :/  Too much glaze and you loose the details, or the gorgious details of the glaze fight with the gorgious details of the body.  So I do functional stuff as well, just to show off the colors I can get from a kiln!  :)   I guess the basic information about my work is, yes, its for sale, and yes, I take commissions.  I work in a communal studio, so commissions can take around two months to produce, since I don’t have control of the kiln. For now.  Mwa ha ha ha ha ha!  Etc.  We’ll see how this blog goes.
